The Japanese concept/character MA (間), commonly translated as gap, interval, or the in between, partakes in many forms of Japanese arts (e.g. architecture, tea ceremony, dance), sports (e.g. Japanese wrestling, fencing, martial arts), and daily life practices (e.g. speaking, walking, to social interaction). There is a recent calling to attend to the “interpersonal dimension of MA”, and we intend to form an interdisciplinary research team to apply research techniques from psychology, neuroscience, engineering, and humanities to conceptualize and quantify this rich cultural concept.
